Our May Event is an outing to Kamakura to catch a glimpse of the ancient samurai culture by visiting two very old temples situated next to each other at the seaside. We will first visit Renjoin Temple for a private tour of the 300 year-old main hall and see the Amida statue dated 1299, guided by the 77th generation priest of the temple.
Next will be the authentic “shojin ryori” (Buddhist vegetarian) lunch at Komyoji Temple, one of the head temples of the Pure Land Sect (Jodoshu). We also plan to have a talk on “shojin ryori” to learn about this special temple cuisine.
The lunch program will last for about one hour but the room is available until 15:00, so you will have time to relax or to walk around to see the main hall or the garden. We plan to arrange a private tour of the “San’mon” (Mountain Gate) for a fee of 500 yen/person as an option after lunch to appreciate the great view from its balcony. You may also enjoy strolling about the area and find beautiful temples nearby that are seldom seen by tourists as they are far from the main Kamakura Shrine district.
