Luncheon and Monthly Meetings
12 October, Wednesday
We had an inspiring talk by the architect ASTRID KLEIN on recent projects from her office KLEIN AND DYSHAM with innumerable slides.
Experiencing internationality from young age, growing up as a German in Italy, studying in France and UK and now living around 25years in Japan, she represents a new style of global citizen.
Within 45 minutes, exactly planned with slides only showing for 19 seconds she somehow entertained us with her office’s work.
Many of you are familiar with the TSUTAYA shops at Hillside Terrace which her office has planned. But may be it you did not had been aware that a tough competition preceded the selection of the architects. Lot’s of projects we have seen at her lecture are now on it’s way of becoming familiar sites in the Japanese landscape like the new building on Ginza’s most prominent corner opposite Wako. Or the Karuizwa hotel with an ensuing round ice-skating ring. Most of the commercial projects had a serious touch. But the TOTO shop at Narita Airport, with it’s half transparent illuminated windows around the toilets really made us all laughing. Beside we get some information on used materials and earthquake proofing in Japan. the few members attending, we only had about 70 participants all enjoyed the presentation.
