Luncheon and Monthly Meetings
November 2017 Luncheon Program Summary
Tokyo 2020: Food for 100,000
Mr. Charles McJilton, Founder and CEO, Second Harvest Japan
Mr. Charles McJilton, founder of Second Harvest Japan, first spoke about the universal health safety net in Japan and how his goal is to create a similar type of safety-net for food. He spoke of their efforts to create a safety-net that is meaningful and appropriate so that anyone in need can have access to food. He spoke of his initial work with the homeless, but pointed out the relative low number of homeless these days but growing number of Japanese citizens living below the poverty line. Second Harvest’s present focus is in matching food surplus to those in need, and in so doing, providing an alternative to destroying food that is still safe for consumption. The main takeaway was that food distribution to those in need should be done in a way that preserves their dignity.
There was a lively Q&A and then Charles welcomed members interested in hearing more about Second Harvest’s efforts to leave their contact information at the door before departing. There were 84 in attendance.
Prior to the speaker presentation, the SIGs each gave a brief outline on their group’s activities in order to encourage further participation by members. There was also an update on the very positive results of the October 2017 Print Show. Next year the show will again be held in Daikanyama to coincide with their autumn festival.
