Let’s go to Mt.Takao (高尾山/Takaosan) for our last program of 2023! One of the closest natural recreation areas to central Tokyo, Takaosan offers beautiful scenery, a spiritual temple and attractive hiking opportunities. Considered a sacred mountain, Takaosan has been a center of mountain worship for more than 1,000 years. Yakuoin (薬王院) stands along the trail near the mountain’s summit. Statues of the gods, one with a long nose (tengu) and one with a crow beak, can be found at the temple and also other spots around the mountain.
We will use the chair lift (roundtrip) that leads halfway up the mountain to enjoy the gorgeous view of the beautiful colored leaves. After getting off the chair lift, we will walk trail #1 (wide and paved) to visit Yakuoin Temple and then continue our walk to the summit. On the way back we will take trail #4 (narrower and unpaved) and then take the chair lift back to the station.
Optional: For those who wish to stay for lunch and onsen, let’s go to Keio Takaosan Onsen Gokurakuyu (entrance fee:1,100 yen). Bring your own towel for onsen. Those who wish to have lunch only, there are many restaurants and cafés around the station.
