Author Hannah Kirshner will talk about how seemingly unrelated strands of one’s life can weave together into a career—and, in her case, a book. Before writing Water, Wood, and Wild Things: Learning Craft and Cultivation in a Japanese Mountain Town, Kirshner was a bike racer, a baker, a bartender, and a food stylist. As research for Water, Wood, and Wild Things, Kirshner immersed herself in small town life in the mountains of Ishikawa, following hunters deep into the woods, learning to turn wooden bowls on a lathe, and working in the local sake brewery. She found that skills as varied as farming and sculpture helped her connect with the people she was writing about and learning from.
Hannah Kirshner is author and illustrator of Water, Wood, and Wild Things: Learning Craft and Cultivation in a Japanese mountain town. Her reporting has appeared in publications including The New York Times and Food & Wine, and on the Proof podcast from America’s Test Kitchen. She’s a Solutions Journalism Network Climate Initiative fellow, and winner of an International Gourmand “Best In The World” award for writing on Japan. Kirshner grew up on a small farm outside Seattle, studied painting at the Rhode Island School of Design, and now divides her time between Brooklyn and rural Ishikawa, Japan.
