Please join us for this highly interesting designers’ talk between Reiko Sudo and Naomi Pollock.
Few people have done as much to bring the world’s attention to Japanese creativity and craftsmanship in textiles as Reiko Sudo, Design Director of NUNO Co. Ltd., a textile design company with retail stores in Roppongi and elsewhere.
Sudo’s textiles, which marry old practices with new technologies, are expertly crafted by weavers and dyers in Japan. Many of those textiles, including those fashioned into elegant and comfortable clothes, are in the collection of museums around the world.
A member of the Advisory Board of Ryohin Keikaku, MUJI’s parent company, since 2016, Sudo champions sustainable textile manufacturing and embraces a wide range of new production techniques.

Reiko Sudo
Reiko Sudo’s interest in textiles began as a young child growing up in Ibaraki Prefecture and admiring the colorful kimono fabric that a visiting merchant would bring to show her grandparents twice a year.
Sudo went on to study in the Craft Department at Musashino Art University. Following graduation, she worked in the textile industry as an illustrator and tapestry weaver. Her focus shifted to design when she went to work for Junichi Arai, a well-known textile designer and the founder of NUNO.
Her work has been exhibited at New York’s Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and London’s Victoria and Albert Museum and other renowned institutions. An exhibit of her work, “Making Nuno : Japanese Textile Innovation from Sudo Reiko,” was held at Japan House in London this summer.
Sudo received the Mainichi Design Prize for her work at the Mandarin Oriental Tokyo. She is an Advisory Board member of Ryohin Kekaku, the parent company of MUJI, a Professor Emeritus at Tokyo Zokei University and a visiting professor at Central Saint Martins in the UK.
Naomi Pollock
A Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, Naomi Pollock is both an architect and an author. She has written numerous books and articles about Japanese architecture and design, including “Made in Japan, 100 New Products,” “Jutaku: Japanese Houses,” and most recently, “Japanese Design Since 1945: A Complete Sourcebook,” which was published in the fall of 2020 in several languages.
Her work has appeared in numerous publications, including A+U, Kinfolk and Architectural Record, for which she is the Special International Correspondent.
Naomi, who was a classic’s major at Dartmouth College, holds Masters degrees in architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design and Tokyo University. She was a long-time resident of Tokyo until moving back to the US in 2020.
She is the editor of Reiko’s latest book Nuno: Visionary Japanese Textiles which will be published by the UK press, Thames & Hudson, in October 2021.
