—————————————————————————————
Lord Mostyn is one of the youngest British Peers. He will give a very personal talk consisting of two parts – The first part will be the background of his aristocratic family’s more than 500-year history and the second part will essentially be about his own life.
He will speak about his family connection to the War of the Roses (1455–85), a series of English Civil battles for control of the throne of England, and the English Civil War (1642–1651), a series of battles between Parliamentarians (“Roundheads”) and Royalists (“Cavaliers”) fought over who would control Parliament and who had the power to govern, then talk about his ancestor Lady Augusta’s influence on art, his family, and the building of the Welsh seaside resort town of Llandudno* (ランドンダーノ in Japanese) in scenically beautiful County of Conway North Wales.
*In Welsh the word Llan means church and Dudno is the name of the local Welsh Saint; hence, Llandudno means “The Church of St Dudno”.
Lord Mostyn will then outline what he does as a Lord – his responsibilities, involvement with charities and his Estate and desire to develop and share his Welsh world. He was recently featured on NHK TV where he talked about his life and the tours he does for Japanese tourists. If time allows, there may also be a short presentation on Wales by the Welsh government.
Please join us for a fascinating bespoke presentation.
Incidentally, Wales’ Conway Castle will be twinned with Japan’s Himeji castle this November 2019.
Speaker Profile
Lord Mostyn speaks Japanese – “I wouldn’t say I’m fluent, I’m half decent though” – supports Arsenal, and is a British hereditary baron. He was born in 1984 and grew up in Chelsea, read modern history at Durham University (taking a BA degree with his dissertation on the French Resistance). He travelled to Japan after university to teach English in Tokyo, where in his own words “he fell in love with the country”. He moved back to London in 2008 and was working in sports betting for a few years before he inherited his family’s estate in 2011 after the passing of his father. He has been living in Wales since and has been involved with the estate; but his love of Japan has made him make many visits back to Tokyo. Recently he started giving tours in Wales to Japanese tourists. He also loves sport, especially football as an avid Arsenal supporter, and participates in many tournaments as a pool player.
