Cultural Programs are delighted to be able to offer members a special event:  Art of Kabuki: Costumes, Colour and Character
Costume plays a vital role in creating the world of kabuki, communicating character, status, personality and the era in which a story is set. Discover how the elaborate kimono transforms a male performer into a convincing female character and explore the artistry behind creating a feminine appearance on the kabuki stage. Learn how kimono patterns have changed through the ages.

The event will feature a small display of kabuki costumes, including same-design costumes used for the film Kokuhō (National Treasure), offering a rare opportunity to see these beautiful garments up close. There will also be a chance to ask questions and to wear kabuki “Uchikake”.

Our speaker is TSUJI Masao: Senior Managing Director, Nihon Engeki Isho Co., Ltd. and Member, Association for the Preservation of Kabuki Costume Production and Repair Techniques. He joined Shochiku Costume Co., Ltd. in 1990. He has played a leading role in the field, serving the Ichikawa family lineage—the head family of the Ichikawa acting line—across two generations, including the 12th Ichikawa Danjūrō and the 8th Ichikawa Shinnosuke (now the 13th Ichikawa Danjūrō Hakuen). He was the costume supervisor for the award-winning film Kokuhō (National Treasure). He actively promotes the appeal of kabuki costumes both in Japan and abroad through initiatives such as overseas lectures and domestic seminars.

The event is open to all CWAJ members and their guests and to the public. Tickets are limited so we encourage you to buy your tickets soon.
