Guest Lecture “How CWAJ Scholarship Changed my Life”

Kanoko Oishi’s career started at a large Japanese financial institution. This was before the Equal Employment Law. Being frustrated from not being treated equally with her male colleagues, she decided to go to Harvard Business School. It was very fortunate that CWAJ provided her with a scholarship, or else she would not have been able to finance her studies. Kanoko’s career dramatically changed after HBS as she joined McKinsey and made partner in five years. She had spent ten years at McKinsey when she gave birth to her son. This was another big change. It made her think about how to make the society better for the next generation. Through her first real contact with the medical field, she learned that Japanese hospitals lack management, and neither the patient nor the staff is happy.
In year 2000, Kanoko left McKinsey and founded Mediva and Platanus Medical Corp. Through their clinics they pilot innovative and patient-friendly solutions and prove that innovation is possible even in this very traditional field. Since then, they have realized many innovations in Japan and globally.
Kanoko’s journey started by receiving the CWAJ Scholarship and her journey will continue to solve the issues in the medical and care field.
