Guest Speaker: Dr. Lillian Wies
To kick off the 69th Print Show to be held at Hillside Forum, Daikanyama from October 14 to 8, the Print Show Committee is thrilled to present the following lecture: Carving New Histories: Women’s Contributions to Japanese Printmaking
Synopsis:
Women have, most likely, always been involved in printmaking in Japan, but their activities—as artists, patrons, and critics—have been underrecognized historically. This talk provides a brief history of women’s many contributions to Japanese printmaking, focusing on women who were active as printmakers in the twentieth century.
Profile:
Lillian Wies is a specialist in modern Japanese art history, with a focus on art by women and on issues of gender and identity. She earned her PhD from the University of Maryland after receiving an MA from Harvard University and a BA from Wellesley College. She is the former Gregory and Maria Henderson Curatorial Fellow in East Asian Art at the Harvard Art Museums and was a curatorial research assistant at the National Museum of Asian Art in Washington DC. Wies is currently living in Tokyo, researching the activities of women painters in early twentieth century Japan.
