Guest Lecture “Changing Japan-U.S. Economic Partnership in East Asia”
Japan-U.S. efforts in intellectual exchange have contributed to their unshakeable alliance, even in economic cooperation. In the early 1990s in its economic primacy, Japan’s aid for Asia was intensively bashed by Washington, now repeated by the critiques against China’s One Belt One Road projects. Though the security relations are wholly different in terms of China, Japan may still be in a secure position to bridge the two powers, allied with other middle powers, including South Korea, Taiwan, and Singapore, who have graduated from aid recipients to full donors, and major ASEAN economies who benefitted fully at the time and are still looking for a balanced relationship with China.
