The inaugural CWAJ Cartier Scholarship was awarded to Rin Ishikawa at the CWAJ General Meeting in May 2023. A graduate of Kyoto University’s Department of Food and Environmental Economics, Ishikawa developed an e-commerce platform that helps consumers buy directly from local farmers. She will use the three-million-yen scholarship to complete an MBA at Saïd Business School, University of Oxford. “During my studies abroad,” Ishikawa said,I hope to learn from advanced European cases of startups developing resilient food supply chains through collaboration with large corporations. My goal after graduation is to apply this knowledge to Japan’s food strategy with the aim of materializing sustainable food policies, such as consumer education through the use of technology.”

The CWAJ Cartier Scholarship is granted to a Japanese woman to study abroad in an English language graduate program to further her leadership potential in entrepreneurship. Scholarships are awarded based on a candidate’s academic excellence, the quality and feasibility of her proposed study, and her potential to contribute to society through entrepreneurship and business.  The application period for CWAJ Cartier Scholarship 2024 is October 16-23, 2023 for the 2024 academic year. For more information, please click here

About CWAJ

The College Women’s Association of Japan (CWAJ), a 100% volunteer organization with members from about 25 countries, is a group of women supporting women through education, arts, community, and friendship. Founded in 1949, CWAJ’s primary mission is to provide scholarships to Japanese women graduate students who study abroad, foreign women graduate students in Japan, and visually impaired male and female students in Japan. Since 1972, almost 900 students have received CWAJ scholarships, enabling them to achieve their academic goals and work for positive change locally and globally. Additionally, CWAJ meets the needs of the community by offering Special Relief Scholarships to students in areas stricken by natural disasters. CWAJ funded the Hanshin Kobe Relief Scholarship in 1996 and 1997, the Fukushima Relief Scholarship from 2012 to 2020, and the Pandemic Response Scholarship for Nursing Students from 2021 to 2023. The CWAJ Scholarship Program is funded by donations and proceeds from the annual CWAJ Print Show, an exhibition and sale of contemporary Japanese prints.
