Don’t miss a fantastic opportunity to hear a dynamic artist talk about her life and art! Her energy is boundless and her passion contagious.
Professor Yanagisawa Noriko believes that her works should reflect the times she lives in, and she expresses herself fearlessly and with conviction. When did she first take an active interest in social issues and begin expressing her concerns through her art? In her talk, she will trace her career spanning over half a century by revisiting her works.

Prof. Yanagisawa studied oil painting at Tokyo University of the Arts, earning a B.A. and an M.A.. She took up etching while at university, then immersed herself in printmaking when she lived in New York from 1971 to 1975. As a young artist in “happening” 1970s New York, she absorbed all that was happening in the city’s cultural scene crowded with talented artists in visual art, music and literature, many of them engaged in the burning issues of the time. In 1992 she had another overseas stint, in London this time, on a fellowship from the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. She was then professor of printmaking at Musashino Art University from 2003 to 2011.

Living in Shizuoka prefecture and always conscious of the presence of a nuclear power plant, Yanagisawa started creating works focusing on the dangers of nuclear power long before the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster. from gender equality to climate change, and from Jazz to hip-hop, she is totally attuned to her times.
