Rui Hachimura and Taisho Pharmaceutical Team-Up with CWAJ to Support Women

TOKYO — NBA star Rui Hachimura and Taisho Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd. (Tokyo, Japan) have made a joint donation to the College Women’s Association of Japan (Ippan Shadan Hojin CWAJ, Tokyo, Japan). Hachimura decided to make the generous donation after his recent discovery of the educational opportunities CWAJ provides for women in Japan and abroad.

“I hope to support women to help them reach their dreams and goals.” Hachimura said.
“I am grateful to the women in my life,  my mother, grandmother and sisters who supported me to become who I am today. They have always been very important to me.

“My mother experienced many difficult and challenging situations, and I hope that there will be many more opportunities for women to play active roles and flourish in the future.”

CWAJ will use this donation to fund CWAJ Scholarships that provide women opportunities to reach their goals.

Hachimura was born and raised in Toyama prefecture in Japan and started playing basketball in junior high school. He attended Meisei High School in Sendai and helped the school win three straight All-Japan High School Tournament titles before heading to Gonzaga University in the United States in 2016. During his third season at Gonzaga, the team reached the Elite Eight at the NCAA tournament and he was given the Julius Erving Award. Hachimura was the first Japanese basketball player to be selected in the first round of the NBA draft. In addition to playing for the Washington Wizards, Hachimura is a member of the Japanese National Basketball Team.

Like Hachimura and Taisho Pharmaceutical, CWAJ understands the impact women have on society. Since 1972 CWAJ has awarded scholarships to Japanese women who wish to study abroad and to Japanese women and men who are visually impaired. This year,  CWAJ is awarding a special CWAJ Pandemic Response Nursing Scholarship for Women to six women in Japan.
