April 2019 CWAJ Luncheon

Many people think of religion as a way to minimize difficulties or avoid the bad things that happen to them. So, they petition for things to go their way or pray that difficulties won’t come their way. If such petitions and prayers work as they claim, I would be the first one to join them. But Prince Siddhartha, who later became Buddha some 2,500 years ago knew better. He came to realize that true happiness is found not in “what happens to us” but in “how we experience life.” This outlook is expressed in the title of my talk, “Difficulties are Inevitable but Suffering is Optional”. The detail of how this is practiced in daily life is found in the basic Buddhist teachings of “Thinking BIIG and Not SMAL” as expressed in the subtitle!  Please join me in exploring one of the ways to make our lives happier and meaningful.
