Past Scholar News: Avery Fischer Udagawa

Avery Fischer Udagawa (IUC 2003) has translated two Japanese children’s novels that have received awards in the United States.

In 2022, the book Temple Alley Summer, written by Sachiko Kashiwaba, illustrated by Miho Satake and translated by Ms. Udagawa was awarded the 2022 Mildred L. Batchelder Award given by the American Library Association. The book was originally published in Japanese in 2011 as Kimyōji Yokochō no Natsu.

Then in January of this year, The House of the Lost on the Cape, also by Sachiko Kashiwaba and translated by Ms. Udagawa, was named a 2024 Batchelder Honor Book.

She wrote to CWAJ with the news, and added “After translating work by Kashiwaba on speculation initially, and proposing it to English-language children’s book publishers for several years, it has been affirming to see both of these novels recognized by Batchelder committees. I am currently translating a third Kashiwaba novel, and I remain ever grateful for the CWAJ’s support during my formal education in Japanese.”
