Scholarship FAQ

General

CWAJ scholarship applications will be available on the CWAJ website in July. 

Applications for different scholarships will be due in October or November. Please see the specific scholarship pages for due dates.

CWAJ does not provide financial assistance other than the CWAJ scholarships described on the CWAJ website, and will only accept applications for scholarships during the posted application periods.

Yes. Eligible applicants will be in Japan at the time of application in the autumn and remain in Japan through the time of the interview in February. Unfortunately this means that scholars with some university end dates, or scholars with some graduate program start dates will not be able to apply. We regret this situation, but we are not able to make exceptions.

No. You must reside in Japan from the time of application to the time of interview to be eligible to apply for CWAJ scholarship. Therefore, you cannot participate in the interview from abroad.

People who are not women are eligible for the Scholarships for the Visually Impaired to Study Abroad and the Scholarship for the Visually Impaired to Study in Japan.

All the other current CWAJ Scholarships are only awarded to people who identify as women.  

Scholarships to Study Abroad

The CWAJ Cartier Scholarship is a scholarship for an entrepreneurial Japanese woman to study abroad. Interested applicants should start by reading the page for the Study Abroad scholarships.

Most applicants must submit a recent TOEFL or IELTS test. The test must be taken within 2 years of the application deadline.

If you have studied in 4 year degree program in English at a Japanese University and can provide a transcript that demonstrates your English skill, the test requirement may be waived. 

Scholarships for Non-Japanese Women

No. CWAJ is a scholarship granting organization and does not provide assistance to students looking for help in applying to Japanese universities.

No. Students on a leave of absence from graduate school are not eligible to apply for CWAJ scholarships.

CWAJ only provides financial scholarships.

CWAJ does have a Foreign Student Circle activities group for foreign students to participate in cultural activities in Japan.

CWAJ Scholars join a large network of Past Scholars and CWAJ Members, and are able to participate in CWAJ activities.

All students in Japan are invited to attend the free CWAJ Print Show.
